When you look at history, sometimes good deeds get rewarded with the highest stations of status and prestigue. Take the men who opened up Watergate, they were heralded as heroes while the news reporters sneered at Edward Snowden when he was finally exonerated.
How your deeds get recipicated for better or worse is really situation dependent. Good deeds will always get squashed by those who fear being exposed which means they're hiding something from you. If a good deeds reward is being shaded in darkness, then the person who judged them fears exposure.
One good deed has that kind of power over darkness. One act of kindness. One act of pure goodness threatens to collapse the entire set up.
The way I look at it, long as I go into a situation knowing I'll probably get punished for my good deeds, I always come out on top. And what's beautiful is we can all come out on top of the situation together by working together instead of against each other. I've built strong bonds this way with people from all backgrounds simply by listening with sharp intetest, being respectful of each others backgrounds and situations, while navigating our way to a middle ground that benefits all active participants.
...so, yeah
